Dear Mayor Hancock,

My name is Matt Winick from Ann Arbor, Michigan with a strong interest in learning history, public policy, and social justice.  In these main subjects, I like to understand the need to make Civil Rights stronger to help protect people who are different, protect the environment from pollution, find ways to make public safety a priority, and many others. Mayor Hancock, the main reason I’m writing you a letter is because I find your work as current 45^th Mayor of Denver, Colorado to be very inspiring to me and explain how I enjoyed reading your book  “Standing in the Gap: Leadership for the 21^st Century.”

In your current role as 45^th Mayor of Denver, Colorado, I am very proud on how you  are a strong supporter of strengthening Civil Right by push for funds to help African Americans along with minorities get into schools in order to get an education, push for funding for women including minorities businesses to help them compete in the economy, advocate for people with disabilities’ rights, and support LGBT rights.   Expanding after school programs to help youth get help on their assignments, funding special education to help students with disabilities get the educational accommodations they need, and Implementing “My Denver Card” to give children including youth free access to recreation centers including gyms and museums to help them from getting into crime or help them learn efficiently are great ways to make education reform better and make youth causes a better place.  On the environment, I like on how you push for funds for renewable energy projects to help reduce addiction to oil with gas, provide funds to help clean up parks including water resources to make them safe for people to use, and encourage businesses including industries to use energy efficient products to help reduce high energy cost.  In order to improve the economy, I like on how you push for reducing late-fees penalties including high taxes for small businesses to help them be part of the community, provide job-training programs to help train workers including youth to develop job-skills to help them get ready for the workforce, and work with different communities including small downtown and minorities communities to provide funds to help fix their community.  Fixing sidewalks to help pedestrians get access by walking, pushing for bike paths on roads to help improve safety for bikers, providing funds to fix the train station to make them safe for people to use, and adding a light rail to help provide people transportation to their jobs or where they need to reach destination are great ways to improve public safety while make transportation be efficient for people to use. Hiring police officers to help keep the community safe, providing funds for training emergency responders to help them be prepared when dealing with emergencies, expanding treatment programs to help drug users get the care they need, and pushing for more educational awareness programs to help educate people about the need to reduce crime are great ways to help reduce crime.  Another thing that I like about your work as Mayor is how you work with museums, national parks, historical sites, and many other attractions to find ways to improve tourism, make them safe for people to interact, and make learning a better place by providing funds to them.

Mayor Hancock, I have Autism with a learning disability. Having a disability is hard for me because I have trouble comprehending on learning different subjects, sometimes I struggle to communicate my thoughts, and get teased. Your commitment to be a strong supporter of Civil Rights and be an advocate for people with disabilities’ rights really inspires me to work hard on my disability. “Standing in the Gap: Leadership for the 21^st Century” that you wrote was a great book and I enjoyed reading it. The book was easy for me to comprehend and it did an excellent job explaining how African Americans have different struggles, different famous people including minorities on how they play a role or how their ideas shape society, and explain different advices on how to work hard at overcoming different obstacles.  This book also motivated me to continue my interest for learning history.  Your current role as Mayor of Denver, Colorado motivates me to continue learning different subjects especially history.  My future goal is to someday teach history or work in a museum to help emphasize the need to make society better.

Mayor Hancock, I strongly believe that you are making a great difference in your current role as Mayor on different issues. You have inspired me to work hard on my disability, read your book, and continue my passion for history. Thanks for taking the time to read my letter, making a great difference for society, writing your book, and inspiring me.  I wish you well to continue your role as Mayor and continue to advocate for great ideas to make society better.
